BREEDING

Frogs used for breeding can be devided into 3 groups:

1. The group D. Pumilio, D. Histrionicus, D. Granuliferus andD.Speciosus
2. The Dendrobates family
3. All other species

Group 1 consist of species of which the parents take care of their larva and feed them. De female lays an unfertilized egg ervery couple of days as food for the larva. Attempts to breed the larva yourself will most likely fail. Currently there is no food to serve as a replacement for the unfertilized eggs. This means that you should let the frogs take care of their larva. However you should make sure there is enough food for the larva (springtailes) when they grow. It is advised that you feed the frogs with fruitflies first and put the springtailes in the vivarium after about half an our (use a small tube to blow the springtailes near the larva).

Group 2 Eggs from these frogs can be carefully picked up with a spoon. Make sure that you don't twist or turn the eggs. Put them in a petridish with some drops of water. Cut a hole in the side of the dish for ventilation. Check the dish often and remove eggs with fungus by using a needle to seperate them from the other eggs. Use a pair of tweezers to remove these eggs. When de larva leave the eggs you can transfer them to dishes filled with water. De larva are cannibals and should therefor be kept isolated from eachother (1 larva per dish: about 8x8 cm with 1cm of water). In the beginning the larva won't be very active.
Their are several ways of preparing food for the larva. Proper food consists of Tetramin, tabimin tablets, tetraphyl, bee clumps, spirulina and dryed nettlepowder. Mix these ingredients (using a coffeegrinder) into a powder and put it in a pot. Put two portions of trofyt and two portions of the mixture you made and mix these two. Feed the larva every 3 days after refilling the water (use a sieve to transfer the larva from one dish to another). You can also feed the larva with some louse, mosquitolarva or a piece of a rainworm. When the larva is growing, it will move more and it will require more food. If the rear legs are devoloped and the front legs are developing, you don't have to feed the larva (it will digest the tail, which it doesn't need anymore). Set up a small vivarium with a land section and a water section and put some moss inside. U can now put some of the frogs in this vivarium. Feed these frogs with springtailes until they are large enough to be fed with small fruitflies.

Group 3 Take care of the eggs the same way as group 2. However these larves are not canibalistic andtherefore don't have to be grown in isolation. You can use a larger dish for these larva (max. 10 larva in one dish). Most species eat plants or algae. You can feed them with spinach. Buy some fresh spinach, wash it and cut it. Divide it into small portions and put them into platic bags. Put these bags in the freezer. Before you feed the larva, pulverise the spinach by smashing it. Let it thaw and use a pair of tweezers to feed the larva.

GOOD LUCK!
